Godspell is coming!!!
“How do you explain GODSPELL? Simply put, it's a modern musical retelling of the story of Christ and His parables, taken from the Gospel according to St. Matthew. By using a variety of outrageous staging techniques that include pantomime, vaudeville routines, sleight-of-hand magic and a collection of beautifully written songs by Stephen Schwartz, GODSPELL's message of love and happiness denies any real sectarian boundaries that might be expected in a play about Christ and His teachings. During its incredibly successful professional run, it was applauded by all denominations, for it brings life and beauty to some powerful ideas: Live, don't merely survive. Love yourself and love your neighbors, friends and enemies alike. And be joyful--above all things, be joyful!”
This excerpt from a 1975 issue of Dramatics magazine says it all… well, almost all: none of the 13 members of MCP’s cast for their spring musical offering of Godspell were even born in 1975. The youth ensemble ranges in age from 12-24. They bring the energy and giddiness of youth that lends itself perfectly to this timeless classic. First time director Justin Bouvier was ready to take on a show and Godpell’s message of community and hope spoke to him. In his modern “clown-free” version, the costumes and conversations have been updated.
An exciting cross section of Addison County youth will take the stage including Lauren Aldrich, Taylor Allred, Seth Brown, Gloria Kamencik, Christi Kroll, James McEnerny, Hannah Miller, Danielle Norris, Emma Richard, Toby Salas, Claire Stetson, Rob Stetson, and Meg Young.
Co-Musical Directors Jen Allred and Serena Eddy-Moulton have been working their particular brand of magic with this fine group for the last six weeks, the harmonies are sounding tight, the solos, vibrant and exciting. Rehearsal pianist and band leader Chuck Miller makes it all possible. Choreographer Tina West has the cast working hard on some ambitious dance ensembles, and Assistant Director Gretchen Cole lends theatrical experience to character development and the importance of “reacting.”
Justin’s choice of venue is Mount Abraham Union High School’s enormous auditorium. This is a big show, with a big house to match. Tickets are on sale now through Town Hall Theater box office (382-9222). There will be 5 performances, 3 evenings ($15) and 2 matinees ($12). The matinees offer a discounted price to attract seniors and children alike. The show runs from March 27th through March 30th. It promises smiles and tears, laughs and fun, see you there!
