325 years ago, 19 people were executed as “witches” in Salem, Massachusetts. Today their stories continue to beguile and provoke.

The Crucible, Arthur Miller’s parable about the Salem witch trials, won the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play. Writing early in the Cold War, the author emphasized parallels between colonial Massachusetts and the “witch hunts” of McCarthyism. Since then countless communities across the country and around the world—from Latin America to China—have discovered their own parallels, adding richness and variety to what has come to be regarded as one of the greatest American plays ever written.

Featuring 27 Vermont actors (including 10 local students), the Players’ production strips this classic of period trappings, giving it a new life beyond our high school reading lists. The result is a riveting, contemporary perspective on the themes of good and evil, power and its abuse: What is the cost of silence? How are injustices still suffered disproportionately by women and people of color? And what do we mean when we use the word “witch”?

Scott Remick (Bristol) stars as John Proctor, along with Kevin Commins (New Haven) as Danforth, Raquel Aronhime (Burlington) as Hale, Jason Duquette-Hoffman (Middlebury) as Parris, Susannah Magee (Shelburne) as Elizabeth Proctor, Anna McIntosh (Middlebury) as Abigail Williams, and Eryn Diehl (Cornwall) as Mary Warren.
