All State Music Festival in Middlebury

All State Music Festivals are a uniquely American tradition. The first All State Festivals were held in the 1920s and were typically sponsored by local instrument companies. Students were housed in local homes, and the festival began with a parade and ended with a well-attended concert. We imagine punch and cookies were served after the concert!!

As you may know, every 10 years Middlebury has the honor of hosting the All State Music Festival. This May 6-8 it is our turn again. The single greatest challenge is finding housing for the 409 student musicians who will be attending the ASMF. We recently learned that Vermont is the last state in the country that houses students in private homes as opposed to hotels. There has been some talk of transitioning Vermont to this model, but this would mean that the Festival could be held only in Burlington. At this point we have found housing for only 176 students.

MCP is helping to reach out to the community to ask if you would be interested in housing a musician or two for the ASMF.

You can house for two nights (5/6 and 5/7) or three (5/6-5/8) and you need only provide breakfast and a bed — a mattress on the floor is fine!

If you’re interested in volunteering to house a musician or two, or would just like to learn more about the ASMF before committing, please contact Hannah Benz at hbbenz@yahoo.com.

Thank you!
