About the play… It is 1904, in Paris, France. The Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit), quaint watering hole to struggling artists and would-be geniuses, welcomes two soon-to-be legends for one extraordinary night. Picasso and Einstein, whose egos match their intellects, spar with the regulars and each other about art, science, inspiration, love, and the promise of the 20th century. Throw in a mysterious visitor who makes the ladies swoon, and you’re in for a well-rounded theater experience. (Rated PG for mild profanity & mature themes)

Equally smart and silly, Picasso at the Lapin Agile asks serious questions about art, science, and genius while it cracks goofy jokes about history, romance, and how to bake a pie in the shape of the letter e. It was Steve Martin’s first full-length play; at the debut reading in Martin’s Beverly Hills home, Tom Hanks read the role of Picasso and Chris Sarandon read the role of Einstein. The 1995 production in New York City won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play.
